Ilmari Hopkins


Born in 1976 in Finland, Ilmari is since 2002 Co-Principal cellist of the Stavanger Symphony
Orchestra in Norway and has since then played a vital role in Norwegian cultural life both as musician and as
teacher. He began his professional training with Anatoly Nikitin at the St.Petersburg State Conservatory in
Russia, and obtained his postgraduate Diploma at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm (class of
Torleif Thedeen).

First Prize recipient of the Lahti Chamber Music Competition, Ilmari has also performed as soloist
with orchestras such as the Swedish Radio Symphony, the Orchestra of the Americas, the National
Symphony Orchestra of Peru, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Chamber Orchestra.
As guest artist and teacher he has taken part in the following festivals: Mlada Praha Festival of
Prague, Bergen Festspillene, the International Chamber Music Festival of Stavanger, Lukas David Chamber
Music Festival of Lima, Peru, Chamber Music Festival of Aghios Nikolaos, Crete and Virtuoso Bel Canto
Festival in Lucca, Italy. In Japan he has given solo recitals in Tochigi and Fukushima. He has also performed
in South Africa, at the Musaion Hall of Pretoria, and given recitals in Pasto, Colombia, invited by Banco de
la Nacion.

Before and during his tenure as Co-Principal in Stavanger, Ilmari has also gained experience in
various other orchestras, including Sinfonia Lahti, the Bergen Philharmonic, the Lima Philharmonic and the
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, working with conductors like Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Paavo Järvi,
Philippe Herreweghe, Andrew Litton and Osmo Vänskä. In later years has also been collaborating with
Fabio Biondi in several Baroque, Classical and early Romantic operas, often playing on gut strings and
paying attention at the historically correct performance practice.

Ilmari is an enthusiastic chamber musician, having co-founded several successful ensembles such as
the SKASEI String Trio and the Stavanger Cathedral Ensemble. His recordings include broadcastings for the
Swedish Radio, live broadcastings for the Chicago Classical Radio WFMT 98,7 FM and a CD with his
SKASEI Trio presenting works by Mozart and Beethoven, released in 2007 by the Italian label Azzurra

As teacher Ilmari has since 2004 been teaching at the Stavanger University and lately also at
Stavanger Music School where he is working as cello and chamber music teacher for the talent program
“Unge Talenter Bjergsted”. He has given master classes in many countries, such as Peru, Brazil, Italy and
South Africa. Since 2008 he’s also cello faculty of the Orchestra of the Americas, based in Washington, DC
and since 2017 cello teacher of ICO Youth Orchestra in Poland. He has also been invited as cello teacher of
several other youth orchestras, including the Norwegian Youth Symphony Orchestra NUSO and Rogaland
