Guido Alberto Fano: A Journey in Words and Music

Friday, February 7 at 7 pm

New York City at the NYU Casa Italiana. Zerilli Marimò

Guido Alberto Fano (1875-1961) was an Italian composer, pianist, conductor, and a Music Conservatory Director. During his life, he was offered three opportunities to move to the United States: in 1905, when colleague Ferruccio Busoni asked him to join him; in 1911, when he was invited by the College of Music in Cincinnati; and during WW2 to escape racial discrimination. However, he was never able to actually move to a country that was looking to welcome him with open arms.

As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth, Maestro Fano’s heritage will be presented in the States, shining a light upon his lyrical and powerful music, previously lost to oblivion in his own country due to his Jewish origins.

Pieces for piano, strings and voice, performed by artists of the Lunigiana International Music Festival (Tuscany, Italy), will be introduced by the composer’s grandson Vitale Fano, who will guide the audience with anecdotes and background from his interesting life.
